Everybody loves pie

We had a very successful International Day at school today. The parents really went to town with the food and I tried everything from homemade egg rolls to fried plantain to empanadas and jam tarts.

The American table was very popular. One family at the school had lived in New York for years and they made a big bowl of popcorn. Another family's Dad is from Maine and they made little pancakes and brought them in with Aunt Jemima syrup. Both were very popular with the kids.

The first thing to go for us was Mamaw's buttermilk pie. I had only made one because I wasn't sure if people would eat it but I needn't have worried. It disappeared quickly and I had two requests for the recipe. The other popular item was the key lime pie. I made two and they were both eaten. People kept coming up to the table saying "Where's the lime pie I keep hearing about?". I had half a dozen requests for that recipe. The BBQ chicken was a big hit with the children, as was the Hershey's Kisses, but the pastrami sandwiches were eaten mostly out of curiosity. I had more than one person ask me what pastrami was. The surprise leftover was the banana split pie. It seems that pineapple isn't very popular here. I'll have to rethink that one next year.

All in all it was a really fun day. I got out our red Radio Flyer wagon to carry all the food down to the school and I even lined it with the Stars and Stripes baby blanket that Mom made Toby. Going down and coming back afterwards with the kids in the wagon was like being on a parade float we got so much attention. We were of course all dressed in UT tops and Rosie was in the UT cheerleading uniform Mom gave her on our last visit. I have been told that next year they expect to see me in fringe, boots and a cowboy hat. I'll have to speak to Mom about that. It's like Western Day at Rugel all over again!
